Electrical Systems Design: Planning Wiring for a Home Renovation in Toronto

Most renovation electrical problems are not installation problems. They are planning problems. A homeowner opens up a wall, frames a new kitchen, and only then asks whether the existing service can carry an induction range, a second wall oven, a heat pump and an EV charger. By that point the drywall schedule is fixed and every fix costs more than it should have.

That is what electrical systems design is for. It is the engineering step that happens before a single wire is pulled: load calculations, circuit distribution, panel sizing, lighting layouts and dedicated circuits for high-demand equipment, all worked out to Ontario Electrical Safety Code standards. What Electrical Systems Design Actually Covers

Design is not a wiring diagram handed over at the end. For a residential renovation it is a documented plan that answers five questions before construction begins:

  • Capacity: what total load will the finished house draw, and does the existing service and panel support it?
  • Distribution: how many circuits are needed, what feeds what, and where does each one land in the panel?
  • Dedicated circuits: which appliances and systems legally or practically require a circuit of their own?
  • Layout: where do receptacles, switches, fixtures and low-voltage runs go, based on how the room will actually be used?
  • Compliance and sequencing: what permits are required, and when does the rough-in inspection need to happen relative to insulation and drywall?

Step 1: Load Calculation — Can Your Service Carry the Finished House?

This is the calculation that decides the budget. A load calculation totals the connected demand of the renovated home — heating and cooling, range, dryer, water heater, EV charging, and general lighting and receptacle load based on floor area — and compares it against the rated capacity of your existing service.

Many older Toronto homes still run on 60-amp or 100-amp service. A 100-amp service that was comfortable for a 1970s household gets tight fast once you add electric heat, an induction cooktop and a Level 2 charger. When the calculation comes back over capacity, the answer is usually an electrical panel upgrade to 200 amps, and knowing that in week one rather than week ten is the whole point of doing the design early. Step 2: Circuit Distribution and Dedicated Circuits

Once capacity is settled, the design assigns circuits. Renovations almost always need more circuits than the space had before, because modern rooms concentrate load in ways older wiring never anticipated. A single kitchen circuit feeding a fridge, microwave and kettle is a nuisance-tripping machine.

Reserve panel space deliberately. Even if the EV charger or hot tub is a phase-two purchase, leaving breaker positions and a conduit path in place during the renovation turns a future EV charger installation from a wall-opening job into an afternoon.

Step 3: The Lighting and Switching Plan

Lighting design is where renovations most often disappoint, and it costs almost nothing to get right on paper. Walk each room in the plan and decide:

  • Task lighting — under-cabinet, vanity, desk and stair lighting, positioned before cabinetry is ordered.
  • Switch locations — at the door you actually enter by, with three-way switching at both ends of hallways and stairs.
  • Dimming — dimmers require compatible fixtures and, in some cases, a neutral at the switch box. Deciding this after drywall means fishing walls.

Step 4: Permits, Rough-In and ESA Inspection

Renovation electrical work in Ontario requires notification to the Electrical Safety Authority, and the work is inspected. Design matters here because inspection has a sequence: the rough-in must be inspected while the wiring is still visible, before insulation and drywall close the walls. Practical Tips Before You Sign Off on a Design

  • Bring your electrician in with your architect, not after. Panel location, service entry and conduit routes are cheap to move on a drawing and expensive to move in a framed wall.

  • Over-provision circuits, not fixtures. Adding a spare circuit and a few extra receptacles during rough-in is marginal cost. Adding them later is demolition.
  • Photograph every wall before drywall. Time-stamped photos of the rough-in are the best troubleshooting tool you will ever own.
  • Keep the design document. A marked-up panel schedule saves hours on every future service call.

Do I need an electrical design if my renovation is just one room?

A formal design package, no. A load calculation and circuit plan, yes — even a single kitchen or basement can push an older 100-amp service past its limit. The calculation is quick and it prevents the most expensive category of renovation surprise.

Do I need a permit for renovation electrical work in Ontario?

Yes. New circuits, panel changes, service upgrades and rewiring all require notification to the ESA and inspection. A licensed electrical contractor files this as part of the job. Uninspected work can create problems at resale and with insurers.

How much does electrical systems design cost in Toronto?
